Adobe AIR Development

Adobe AIR is a cross-platform runtime environment developed by Adobe Systems for building rich Internet applications that run as desktop applications on Windows, Mac and Linux desktop computers. AIR applications are built using standard web technologies like HTML, Javascript and AJAX, as well as the proprietary Adobe technologies Flash and Flex.

Adobe AIR allows us to unleash our experience building web apps to build powerful web applications that run right on the desktop, requiring no browser. Additionally, the AIR runtime (a small installer required to run AIR apps) provides access to a wealth of operating system functionality that browser-based apps don't have, enabling AIR apps to do things that ordinary web apps can't do.

One of the AIR apps we built for a client has become a criticial piece of their day to day operations. It allows their staff, who operate in far-flung places (often without internet connectivity) to do their jobs in a way they could not even imagine only one year ago. Through some really clever data entry and navigation schemes that we developed, which take advantage of the fact that AIR apps can run off of a database on the user's machine, the application has provided a key competitive advantage for our client, and has quickly become the envy of their industry.

Adobe AIR is quickly becoming recognized as a very viable way to bring great brand experiences to the desktop. Large companies like the New York Times, eBay and AOL have AIR-based applications, and some service-oriented companies, like Google and Twitter, are finding more and more AIR apps being built that leverage their web service API's (application programming interfaces), adding even more value to their services. Adobe recently announced that over 100 thousand desktops now have Adobe AIR installed.
